Cataracts, both ‘Congenital Hereditary’ (CHC) and ‘Hereditary’ (HC) forms and Generalised Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) are found in the Miniature Schnauzer.

• Congenital Hereditary Cataract (CHC): Puppies can be eye tested for CHC at around 6 – 8 weeks, once micro chipped and before their sale as show dogs or pets

• Hereditary Cataract (HC): this form can only be diagnosed from around 6 months to 2 ½ years onward and sometimes later

• Generalised Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA): this form may not appear until 1 year of age upwards, but may be detected in some breeds at any point between 6 months and 6 years. The earliest reported case in Miniature Schnauzers was in a 3 year old
